Established in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain name extension is the only one intended for personal sites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other titles people are famous by. At the beginning, just third-level registrations were permitted, so if you planned to secure john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased third-level domains remained operational.
